Stock up on vintage 2008 while deals last

Tesco’s deal offering 25% off on all its wines and champagnes – on purchases of six bottles or more – comes to an end this coming Monday (31 October) but is only running in tandem with one other discount on Taittinger Brut Réserve (down to £20.25 if you buy at least six bottles). As November nears the discounts are likely to sharpen on the main brands sold through all the grocers, but now may be the time to stock up on a few bottles of vintage Champagne.

There are2016-04-12 12.23.18 some very fine vintage champagnes around, with 2008 an impressive wine in the right hands and something that will be good to tuck away for several years, providing you have a good cellar – dry, cool, dark and vibration free — or other suitable storage. You can buy Veuve Clicquot 2008 at Tesco for £31.50 until Monday (it’s a bargain at that price) which while showing the fresh acidity of the vintage, also has the power and depth bestowed by a large dollop of Pinot Noir in the blend.

Taittinger 2008 is available at ASDA, online only, at £37 currently and this has more citrus notes in evidence bought by good quality Chardonnay in the mix. The just released lively and still quite linear Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage 2008, which will reviewed in more detail in these pages very soon, is reduced at Majestic to a Mix Six price of £34.99 for most of November. It would make a great Boxing Day aperitif to freshen your
jaded palate.

20160822_181129_resizedIf you want something softer, creamier and more texturally developed, the previous Moët & Chandon 2006 release is still widely available and on offer currently at Morrisons for £35 a single bottle, if you can find stocks, while 2006 Laurent-Perrier – available at £37 a bottle in Sainsbury’s until Tuesday (1 November) – continues to impress.

The very easy and approachable Heidsieck & Co. Monopole Vintage 2009 – a more forward, warmer vintage than ’08 that’s quite voluptuous here – is just £19.99 in a Mix Six price at Majestic.
