Better deals emerge again as summer looms
As the second May bank holiday weekend approaches there are a few decent deals offered by the major supermarkets though more are likely to emerge. Up to 21 May Sainsbury’s has some of the best, the most attractive discounts being on its own label champagnes Blanc de Blancs, Blanc de Noirs and Charles de Muret magnums.
Waitrose is offering Bredon Cuvée Jean Louis Brut NV at half-price on-line until 21 May too. It says on the website this is supplied by P&C Heidsieck, which it used to be, but the sample I was sent came from Lombard & Médot and while it is a pleasant, light easy drinking style, it is not the same as the P&C Heidsieck blend. Elsewhere the best value is to be found at Majestic where a new raft of deals started at the end of last month.
If you are bored with the limited supermarket choice, Berry Bros & Rudd has three superb grand cru champagnes under its United Kingdom Cuvée label which even at their full retail prices offer great value. There’s the Le Mesnil Blanc de Blancs, which was was the non-vintage champagne that most impressed me at the recent UK annual Champagne tasting in Whitehall. A Brut Rosé style from Benoît Marguet, who is based in the grand cru village of Ambonnay and who, as Berry’s buyer Simon Field says “makes fine, individual, fragrant wines”. Plus Berrys’ UK Cuvée Grand Cru Brut from the fine Mailly co-operative, a classic 75/25 Pinot Noir/Chardonnay blend with over three years ageing that sells for a very reasonable £26.95 a bottle. It also have one of the best list of growers’ wines in the UK.
