Merchant Offers

Here we look at the champagnes we like in retail outlets outside the supermarket arena. This will include some of the best independent merchants and ‘department stores’, concentrating on the companies that have the most interesting champagne selections. Periodically we will review the whole champagne range of individual merchants or small groups.

We will concentrate on picking the champagnes that offer the best drinking at their respective price levels. Though we will also try to keep you abreast of deals that make these wines even more attractive.

Berry Bros & Rudd have a particularly fine collection of what they call ‘Artisan champagnes’ many of which are made by individual growers — récoltant-manipulants — who only produce their champagnes from grapes grown in vineyards they own. Berry’s also works with two of the best co-operatives in Champagne, respectively based in and named after the Grand Crus of Mailly and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. We concentrate on these Artisan champagnes here, rather than wines from the main houses which Berry Bros also sell. Why? Simply because these are some of the most exciting champagnes produced in the whole region.
